Abstract

This descriptive study was attempt to identify the body image and life satisfaction with
plastic surgery patients. The subject of this study were 105 patients who have had plastic
surgery in gener al hospital in Taegu city. Data were collected June 1st to July 25th, 1999
by the means of a questionnaire. The instrument used for this study were Semantic
Differential Scale by Osgood, Body Cathexis Scale by Secord & Jourd, and Life satisfaction.
Index - Z developed by Wood, Wylie and Sheafer. The data analyzed using the SAS
computerized progr am and include percent age, t - test , ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The results of this study were as follows :
The subjects consisted of 75.2% in female, 54.3% of them was in between 21 and 30
years old. It appeared that 63.8% of them were unmarried. 55.2% of them had no religion.
51.4% of them were graduated from the university. 74.3% of the respondents had an
income. 48.6% of subjects had over 2 times experiences of plastic surgery . 69.5% of them
had a plastic surgery of face and neck. 54.3% of them had a plastic surgery for cosmetics.
Mean score of body image was 75.64 in Semantic Differential Scale, 146.94 in Body
Cathexis Scale. Mean score of life satisfaction was 25.32.
